CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING WINES

Begun by a Benedictine monk in 1688, Champagne has since attended thousands of parties and toasted countless celebrations. Located 90 miles northeast of Paris, the Champagne region has exported it’s famous “sparkling” technique around the globe. No other wine is so associated with joy and festivity. It makes the young wise and the old young again.

CHARDONNAY
The earliest recorded reference to Chardonnay occured in 1330 when Cistercian monks in France built stonewalls around their vineyards protecting their “precious golden grapes” from peasants. It has since become one of the most widely planted grape in the world. An important component to Champagne, Chardonnay is planted and enjoyed in every wine making region on Earth.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON & CABERNET BLENDS

When Baron de Brane pulled up his white varietals at Chateau Mouton in the 18th century and replaced them with a little known red grape called Vidure, a wine revolution began. A relative newcomer to the wine world, Vidure -- now known as Cabernet Sauvignon -- has become the most widely planted and consumed red wine on the planet. Cabernet berries have a thick and very tough skin which, enables the grape to withstand disease and harsh climates. Often blended with other varieties to soften it, Cabernet has become synonymous with age and, at its best, can last more than a century.

MERLOT

“The Bride of Cabernet,” Merlot has been planted as early as the second century. However, it wasn’t until the early 1800’s that Merlot was bottled as a stand-alone varietal. An early ripening grape, Merlot has found great success in California as a softer more approachable young wine.

PINOT NOIR / BURGUNDY

Ancient Romans knew this grape as “Helvenacia Minor” and began cultivating it as early as the 1st century. The reputation that garners Pinot Noir so much attention, however, is owed to the wines of Burgundy France. For most of wine history, this two mile wide, thirty mile stretch of hills called the Cote d’ Or (Slope of Gold) is the only region to achieve constant success with the Pinot Noir vine. However, recent years have shown that excellent Pinor Noir wines can come from New World regions such as California and Oregon.

BORDEAUX

Most wine lovers would agree that Cabernet’s spiritual and historic home lies in Bordeaux, France. Merlot and Cabernet Franc make up the “red grape trio” of Bordeaux, while Petite Verdot and Malbec are also used in lesser quantities. Throughout the ages, the region’s reputation for fine wine is unsurpassed, and its principles of wine production remain, to this day, a yardstick for other aspiring wine regions throughout the world.
